Press release: first Deer release in Ogliastra (Urzulei)

17 Februar 2014

On the 21st of February 2014 a herd of deer  will be released in the area of the Province of Ogliastra, in the Supramonte. The Red Deer will come back in this area since the 1900s.

According to the project LIFE11 NAT/IT/00210  the species coming from the fence of “Sa Portiscra" (Urzulei), will be released in Corsica and in the Province of Ogliastra, areas where Red Deer used to live.

15 species will be released after genetic and health tests. The deers are identified through ear brands. Four of them (2 females and 2 males) wear a radio collar, very useful for monitoring their position.

Release will be conducted by Ente Foreste della Sardegna and I.S.P.R.A, the Province of Ogliastra and the Province of Medio Campidano, partners of the project.
