New releases of deer

31 March 2016

On March 31st, among the activities of LIFE+ Nature Project One deer two islands, 25 deers from the protected enclosure of Casabianda were freed on the Nature 2000 area of “Plateau du Cuscionu – massif de l’Alcudina”, in the territory of Zicavu. The main goal of this operation is to ease the genetic enrichment between populations of deer coming from Alta Rocca and Fium Orbu, in order to avoid future consanguineous offspring.

Animals were captured in the enclosure area of old Casabianda, which were closed at the sunset, about at 8pm. Captures were carried on by the PNRC staff. They were performed from 7am to 12.30pm. Once captured, deer were moved by van to Chisà, where they were boarded on helicopter to be flown to Zicavu territory.

7 trips by helicopter were necessary to complete the moving. They were managed by Corseus company.

GPS transponders installed on animals will help scientists to better know the behaviours of the species.

Operations were successful thanks to the Corsica Regional Natural Park staff as well as the Corseus crew.

The Corsica Natural Regional Park would like also to thank all Administrations and local partners which help to achieve these results. In particularly we would like to thank the City Hall of Zicavu and its mayor Mr. François – Marie Dominic, the Zicavu hauting company as well as the City Hall of Chisà and its mayor Mr. Michel André Galinier.
